  • 1948: Laurence Olivier's 'Hamlet' becomes the first foreign film to win Best Picture, having been made in the UK.
  • 1959: 'Ben-Hur' is the first of only three films to win 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The other films were 'Titanic' (1997) and 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' (2003)
  • 1962: 'Lawrence of Arabia' credits only male actors in its cast, making it the only Best Picture winner to have credited roles for actors of only one gender
  • 1969: 'Midnight Cowboy' is the first and only X-rated film to win Best Picture
  • 1990: With 'The Godfather Part III''s Best Picture nomination, Francis Ford Coppola's franchise becomes the first of only two trilogies to have all three films nominated for the award. The only other to do so was The 'Lord of the Rings'

  • 2009: Lee Daniels (right) becomes the first and only African-American Best Picture-nominated director for his film 'Precious', which starred Gabourey Sidibe (left)
  • 2009: Disney-Pixar's 'Up' is the first computer animated film to receive a Best Picture nomination
  • 2009: James Cameron's sci-fi epic 'Avatar' is the first Best Picture nominee to have been filmed entirely using 3D film technology
